Mining Contractor of the Year

SMW Group Bucking the Industry Trends

As the Inaugural Queensland Mining Contractor Awards were handed out last night, one thing was clear: innovation is paying off for SMW Group.

Winners of the Inaugural Mining Contractor of the Year Award and finalists in two other categories, SMW Group have been recognised for their approach to making projects smarter, faster and more efficient.

A recent Deloitte report outlined the struggles that other mine service firms are facing, with the Deloitte mining service index declining 2.05 points in the first quarter of the year.

SMW Group Managing Director Jack Trenaman says their success is due to the diversity and skills of the team they’ve been able to put together.

“SMW Group aim for excellence in what we do, of course, but this is made easier by the amazing team we have supporting us.

Our management team is composed of myself, a fitter by trade, Scott Stevens who is a boilermaker by trade, and Frank Humphreys, an engineer.

This means the solutions that we come up with are different, and ultimately help us to be faster, smarter and more efficient – which is what the market is looking for,” said Mr Trenaman.

The Deloitte report credited the tough conditions in the industry to ‘disruptive market pressures’ and the competitiveness of the tendering process.

Diversification or servicing a niche sector was Deloitte’s reason for any leading performers to be on top of the market – but SMW Group believes that innovation is another reason.

The premise of the Queensland Mining Contractor Awards was to recognise those companies that are rising above their peers by thinking outside of the box and taking initiative to get jobs done and provide the best value to the client.

Jodie Currie, Director of the Bowen Basin Mining Club and host of the Awards, says SMW Group should be proud of their efforts in a difficult environment.

“SMW Group are a prime example of the fact that you don’t need to be based in Mackay to service the mining industry successfully.

As winners of the Mining Contractor of the Year it’s obvious that they are doing everything in their power to get jobs done in time and on budget, and it’s great to see their peers recognising that as well,” said Ms Currie.

After a busy week exhibiting at QME and taking out the top award at the Mining Contractor Awards, SMW Group are continuing with business as usual.

We can’t rest on our laurels. SMW Group will continue to be taking on work in the field and in the workshop – after a little celebration with our team, of course!” said Mr Trenaman.
