SMW Group is in the running for two major industry awards, representing Central Queensland strongly on the national stage.
Apprentice Quintin Smith was recently awarded the MTA Institute Apprentice of the Month for August 2020. Quintin works as a mechanical fitter apprentice in SMW Group’s Parkhurst workshop, and is in the running for the prestigious title of 2020 Apprentice of the Year.
SMW Group CEO Jack Trenaman says the award reflects SMW Group’s ongoing dedication to training, as one of Rockhampton’s largest employers of apprentices.
“We’re proud of Quintin and his achievement, as well as our team of mechanical fitters who are obviously doing great work in on-the-job training.”
Also this month, SMW Group achieved a finalist spot in the Queensland Mining Awards 2020 under the Best Product Launch category. SMW Group entered their ‘Ultralift’ product, which revolutionises the way complex lifts are managed on mine sites and in heavy industrial workshops.
Mr Trenaman notes that the Ultralift represents the best of SMW’s capabilities in manufacturing, fabrication and innovative thinking.
“The Ultralift was inspired by similar technology in the shipping industry – it’s a safe way to lift a heavy piece of equipment, like a truck tray or a train wagon, and move it around our site.”
“The mining industry doesn’t have a solution like this, and with safety as a critical focus for the industry, we saw a need for an engineered solution.”
“We are over the moon to be acknowledged as one of Queensland’s leading companies in the mining industry, on the cutting-edge of new product development.”
The success follows last month’s merger and public listing announcement, with SMW Group now the only listed company to be headquartered in Rockhampton.
Quintin will find out if he is the Apprentice of the Year on 16 October. The winners of the Queensland Mining Awards will be announced 23 September in Mackay.
