The SMW Group story

Engineering continuous improvement over two decades

From one mobile welding trailer to over 300 staff supplying end-to-end trade and engineering solutions, SMW Group’s steady growth is a testament to innovation and great leadership.

Humble beginnings

SMW Group started out as a mobile welding business, with founding Director Scott Stevens operating as the sole working tradesperson. Several years later the ownership expanded with Frank Humphreys and Jack Trenaman joining as Directors.

The new ownership structure saw continued growth past a milestone of 100 employees. With accelerated growth capabilities of multiple trade and engineering disciplines, it was time for a new business strategy and rebrand to SMW Group.

The branding change and great customer service opened many doors for the company, positioning SMW Group as a full end-to-end mining and heavy industry service provider, not just a trade-based business.

We truly partner with our clients to help them solve problems – whether that’s through on-site service delivery, clever engineering or quick manufacturing and repair turnarounds.

Future-focused expansion

The move from Depot Hill’s Wharf Street to expansive facilities in the Parkhurst Industrial Estate provided SMW Group with space for a fabrication workshop, mechanical workshop and on-site abrasive blasting and painting facilities.

Parkhurst Industrial Estate ideally positions the workshop with northern access to the Bruce Highway, future Rockhampton Ring Road and the rail line. Importantly, SMW Group are the only facility of its kind authorised to operate 24/7.

The business employs over 300 staff across multiple trades and engineering disciplines and is known across the Bowen Basin, Queensland and Australia for a dedication to engineering continuous improvement.

Forging ahead in every season

SMW Group have long been leaders in innovation and automation, with a team of tradespeople and engineers redefining best-practice in mining and heavy industry manufacturing, maintenance, robotics and fabrication. An example of this is SMW Group’s Queensland Mining Contractor of the Year win in 2014 – recognised by industry peers for a game-changing production line approach to full-fleet overhauls that dramatically reduced tray repair costs to the customer by $1 million over the first 10 tray refurbishments.

The Contractor of the Year accolade came in the midst of mining’s toughest times in recent memory, with SMW Group defying industry trends and growing through the downturn.

20 years strong and moving towards the future

Recent changes to the corporate structure of the business sets up SMW Group for strong, diversified growth in a region that is set for unprecedented infrastructure and commercial prosperity.

By joining with Mackay engineering group BAE Engineering, SMW Group now operates in a new league, able to provide service to both the northern and southern Bowen Basin with additional workshop, skill and trade capacity.

BAE Engineering brings decades of experience in mining industry fabrication, plus successful bucket and tray brand Taurus Mining Solutions.

Together, today’s SMW Group is stronger than ever and ready to take on new opportunities in mining, defence and industrial projects.
